The phrase “1Malaysia” has become a household name in the recent months, ever since Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak was sworn in as Prime Minister of this country. However, it would be interesting to find out how many people actually know the origins of 1Malaysia.

United we stand, Divided we fall
The Internet is a great source of entertainment, information and opinion. Politicians have turned to the World Wide Web to spread their views and garner public opinions. Datuk Seri Najib is no different, as he has his own blog which he updates frequently, and runs regular public polls. His blog is called 1Malaysia. That’s right; 1Malaysia was coined from the title of our Prime Minister’s blog.
The blog was started to “provide a free and open forum,” as in the words of Najib, and generate constructive discussions on issues that matter and involve the entire nation. Just like the blog, the 1Malaysia concept is to embrace the uniqueness of all cultures and create a sense of unity in the diverse environment we live in. One must never forget that our own freedom fighters and forefathers fought for a Malaya that belonged to everyone, and our PM has time and again reminded us to be thankful.
In his blog, Datuk Seri Najib listed down 8 values he expects from a 1Malaysia nation: Perseverance, Acceptance, Education, Integrity, Meritocracy, Humility, Loyalty and last but not least, Culture of Excellence. These values reflect the mindset of a developed nation, a signature of First World countries, which Malaysia aspires to be a part of by 2020. A cultured rakyat and politically-savvy youth are essential for a country’s development, and only with these values instilled, can such a dream be realized.
1Malaysia is a welcome deviance from previous ruling styles as 1Malaysia is the power of the people. From the theme song, right to ideas for the annual Budget, 1Malaysia goes through the people prior to higher-office discussions. As everyone can see, even the blog comes in the four major languages: Malay, Chinese, Tamil and English. Everyone is treated as an equal, and as an individual, and every thought seems to count.
Like our PM has said, each of us wants opportunity, respect, friendship, and understanding. Here’s hoping that the spirit and objective of 1Malaysia never deviates!
