Are you creative? Need a platform to design? Get to know School of Design and explore your talent in it!

Although being relatively the smallest school in UCSI University, Associate Dean Mr. M. Y. Teh of Faculty of Music, Social Sciences and Design had always been happy to work with a team of young dynamic lecturers and designers. In the five years of his tenure with the School of Design, there have been lots of hiccups and every single one had motivated him to become stronger to make sure his school rose above it all.

Mr. Teh describes his school as a boutique because it is unique and small, which is why they have fewer students in order to give more attention to them. There are only 28 students currently taking the 3D Animation course which is project based. Therefore the students are required to be independent in dealing with their projects.

“We believe we are virtual people and we need a lot of commitment in creating new 3D animation designs,” he explained. The new 3D animation lab was launched in March 2010 for two main purposes. First, to create external awareness in the animation industry and second, for the internal UCSI U community, to inform them about the existence of a 3D animation course.

Mr. Teh also said that it was very important to launch the lab because currently everything is in cyberspace, and without computers, it is impossible to make an impact on design. According to him, the most important investment would be the human resources to guide the students in designing.

The students will learn how to design models such as 3D animation characters from scratch and then transform the ideas to the computer. “Characters will be designed to run, laugh, cry and created for the big screen. Animators are important as they are the people behind the screen, designing and creating ideas visually for a production” he added.

Depending on the characters in a story, the budget, resources and time will be the essence of a good production. Normally a 30-second movie takes two to three months of production for an experienced animator. Much dedication and hard work is needed to complete the task. There are also plans for a similar project to be done by lectures and students but this will depend on funds and or investors.

“We are expecting more students next semester in terms of enrollment” but to Mr. Teh “What is more important is to just have fun and enjoy the process”.
