A Day Worth Remembering – UCSI University 22nd Convocation

News Article

18th July 2009 marked an extremely crucial date for some 1,346 graduating students of UCSI University 22nd Convocation. It was rather a tense yet joyful morning for the University as it was flooded by thousands of delighted parents, staff and of course the graduates themselves. Graduates were seen busy helping each other putting on their robes and taking pictures among themselves as token of memoirs. Lecturers were also there to cheer and congratulate their students whom they have nurtured and coached within these few years.

This year, UCSI University also celebrated its first ever Convocation as a full-fledged university at the grand DeTSAR hall. There was soothing Malay traditional gamelan music to keep the parents entertained before the ceremony began. Among those who graced the convocation were Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Abdul Rahman Arshad, the Chancellor of UCSI University, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Musa Mohamad, Dato’ Dr. Haji Mohd. Karim Haji Abdullah Omar and Vice Chancellor Peter T. S. Ng.

It was a joyous ceremony until the moment where two posthumous awards were presented. The first award was for the late Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Ahmad Razali bin Haji Mohd. Ali, the Chairman for the Board of Governors for Sedaya College from 1998 to 2001. For the first time, UCSI University awarded an honorary doctorate in education to the late Tan Sri. His daughter, Dr. Nor Aida conferred a speech before accepting the award for her late father.

Perhaps one of the most heart-wrenching moments of the ceremony was when Mass Communication Associate Dean Pn. Roslina Abdul Latif gave her emotional acclamation to her former student, Syed Mohamed Nur Bin Syed Aladdin, who passed away during his internship in Astro. Pn. Roslina’s speech was so moving and heart-shattering that every single Mass Communication graduate stood up in silent tribute to their late friend. Some could not hold back grief, ending up in remorseful tears.  Syed’s father proudly received the posthumous degree for his son from the Chancellor.

The ceremony ended with a photography session and light refreshments for attendees. Countless bouquet of flowers and soft toys overflowed the University grounds and it was a spectacular sight with happy graduates and equally proud parents.
