By Conrad Edmund Bateman Mitch Albom once said that, “The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.” In conjunction with a yearlong celebration of UCSI University’s Silver Jubilee, the
"Light UP Lives Charity"
BY BALAMURUGAN RADAKRISHNAN Taking English Literature this semester was something totally new for me. At first I didn’t know what to expect from the course but I forged on anyway. The class environment was different from the usual mass communication students’ infestation; here we had a combination of students from English Language and Communication and Engineering. It was an interesting mix and good exposure, I must say.

The cast of the Shakespearian play
As part of our syllabus, our lecturer, Ms. Lilian Leong included a Shakespearian play for us to organize and present. After a rather long list of suggestions and after much deliberation, A Midsummer Night’s Dream was voted as the play for this semester.
Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a comedy about four lovers and the twists and turns in their love story. The first protagonist couple, Lysander and Hermia flees a non-supportive father and the laws of Athens to get married elsewhere. They are followed by Demetrius (the man who Hermia’s father chose for her) and Helena (the woman who is deeply in love with Demetrius).
Magical maladies take control of the situation in the form of Puck (a mischievous spirit of the forest) as he accidentally pours the love potion on the wrong Athenian man who happens to Hermia’s lover Lysander and initiates a stir in the couple’s love polygon. The rest of the story is about the forest spirits and how they influence human’s problems.
At first I was extremely reluctant to act in the play, simply because I’ve never done it before. But my classmates and Ms. Lilian encouraged me to take the challenge and also it would be a good experience for me. So I agreed to play Theseus, the duke of Athens whose marriage to the queen of the Amazons was the central event of the whole play as it was the celebration that brought all the other characters together in the plot.
Acting in a play with my classmates was indeed fun. Although we encountered difficulties during our rehearsals but ultimately completing the project together triumphantly, was very satisfying. One of my major problems was memorising the script, up until two days before the play I still needed the script to refer to. Finally a day before the actual play, I managed to go on without the script (still keeping it as a memento though) as I practiced the script more often with a friend who helped me practice my lines.

A scene from the play
Initially, literature was a subject I dreaded but somehow it turned out to be a real eye opener. There are just abundant things one can learn in this class and it is fun (not the poems) but of course the play was the most exciting part of it all, an added advantage for anyone who wants to learn something new.
A class assignment such as this brings the students and lecturer together and provides an opportunity for us to experience different activities in university. It makes the time spent here more worthwhile and more adventurous. Kudos to Ms. Lilian for an awesome experience!
