The Last Airbender – Visual Treat!

News Article

If I mention the word ‘Avatar’ in passing, I am sure you would imagine blue creatures jumping from one tree branch to another.

I love THAT Avatar, but I’m not here to talk about the inhabitants of Planet Pandora.

It is sad that not many people recognise that Avatar was originally the name used for a cartoon series aired in Nickelodeon, just about 5 years back. Does Avatar: The Last Airbender or Avatar: The Legend of Aang ring a bell?

Aang

Noah Ringer plays Aang

I was not one of the animated series’ loyal followers, but I did know of its existence and the critical acclaims it garnered, which is exactly why my excitement overflowed when I heard M. Night Shyamalan was going to make a big-screen adaptation of it.

For those who don’t know the story of Avatar, here’s a short, simple and precise gist for you: Avatar is the story of Aang, The Last Airbender, who is out to get the King of the very destructive Fire Kingdom and restore peace in the world.

I heard many bad reviews about the movie before going for it, but I am a weird person – bad reviews pique my interest even more. So I went in to the cinema hall without expectations but with great curiosity, and came out well-rewarded.

You might want to know why I found the movie quite excellent. First of all, a lot of us forget that movies are part of the entertainment business. The Last Airbender was exactly that – ENTERTAINING. The visual effects were stunning in standard dimensions; I can just imagine its brilliance in 3D.

The Last Airbender also plays with the subject matter of destruction and pollution, albeit told in an extravagant fantastical manner. The basis of the story is something that is close to my heart – which is also why I loved the “Blue” Avatar as well.

Dev Patel

Dev Patel as Prince Zuko

Dev Patel is underused as Prince Zuko in this movie, but I have a feeling there is a lot more coming from him in the other two movies in this trilogy. His character with grey shades, a brooding anti-hero, was played magnificently plus my movie partner and I could not help admiring his good looks!

Special mention must go to Noah Ringer, who plays the titular role, and Nicola Peltz, who plays Katara, a water bender. These young talents handled their roles brilliantly – I am definitely looking forward to the visual adaptations of Book 2 and Book 3!
