By Conrad Edmund Bateman Mitch Albom once said that, “The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.” In conjunction with a yearlong celebration of UCSI University’s Silver Jubilee, the
"Light UP Lives Charity"
That was the strong message from former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to the blogging community at the Asian Bloggers and Social Media Conference 2010 that was held on the 28 & 29th July in Kuala Lumpur.
Tun Dr Mahathir, now a prominent blogger via his www.chedet.co.cc site, gave thought-provoking ideas on how to stay relevant by using the medium as an engaging tool to develop a relationship with the audience when he kicked off the inaugural conference.
Entitled “Building a Community around Your Cause by Attracting and Engaging People”, he reminded bloggers that they were an important medium in the virtual world and had the ability to bridge the community.

Tun M - Blog responsibly and always tell the truth
“But having the freedom does not mean we can say anything that cannot be substantiated. We must keep to the truth. If we do that, bloggers will become more popular” he added.
He also said that if done responsibly, bloggers can be as powerful as governments because they can reach the people immediately, helping them to form different opinions on certain important issues.
Then he asked the 400 audience, how easy is it to surf porn, inviting laughter from the audience. He continued, “I tried for my own education”… drawing more laughter from the crowd. “Don’t get me wrong, these things don’t excite me anymore, they might excite you young people but not me” he said with a mischievous grin.
Tun M said when he was still in office during the setting up of the Multimedia Super Corridor; the country had made a promise not to censor the Internet. This accessibility however does not have a good effect on the young, excitable people who get worked up watching porn, resort to taking out their pent-up energy on babies and old women.
He said that he was having second thoughts now. Maybe there is a need to censor some things that appear on the Net, especially access to pornography.
He was given a thunderous ovation when he ended his speech and then the mad rush by photographers to take his picture. I found myself running with the crowd. It’s amazing how this man still commands coverage and after leaving the newsroom for so long, I still run after him! As we were walking side by side, I extended my hand to him, which he grasps firmly and smiles. Yes, it was so good to see you again Tun.
The conference drew top bloggers and social media experts locally and internationally who gathered to discuss topics
