Creating awareness with public campaigns

News Article

By Sashareen Omar

On Friday, 16th of July 2010, Dulux ICI Malaysia started their Dulux Paint Bank campaign to create awareness amongst the public about the dangers of Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) that could be found in old paints. Dulux Paint Bank is an educational and empowerment campaign initiated by Akzo Nobel, the world’s largest paints and coating company. Once these chemicals were inhaled into the body, it can slowly cause damage to the immune system, organs and or brain functions.

The other objectives that the Dulux Paint Company wished to achieve was educating the public on safe disposal methods of paint, offering consumers a free and environmentally-friendly alternative to dispose their old paint and contribute back to society by adding colours to people’s lives by repainting of needy homes.

Our group joined the Dulux Paint Bank volunteering activity that was held at CADS Enhancement Centre. We found out about this activity through our Study Skills and Employability class’s lecturer, Ms. Krishnaveni and got further information through the advertisements in the newspaper as well as the Dulux Paint Bank’s website.

We participated in this campaign as part of our Study Skills and Employability subject’s Community Service Project. Our group consisted of eight members from different programes, namely English Language and Communication (Nur Liyana Hamdan, Sashareen Omar and Jamilah Zahirah), Mass Comm (Jesmyn Tan, Choo Fui Ee and Leong Keng Cheng) and Psychology (Ooi Kai Zheng and Lim Chong Jin).

As the aim was to create awareness amongst the public, we brought along two of our friends, Zaheera Zaharuddin from UCSI’s Foundation Programme and Edmund Lim from Tunku Abdul Rahman College to participate.

At CADS Enhancement Centre, the jobs were distributed according to gender. The male volunteers were assigned to do the painting while the female volunteers were assigned to clean the house and the compound. We cleaned five gym mats and managed to finish by noon. All in all, we had a lot of fun at the campaign and it really felt good to be able to participate in such awareness campaigns.

We decided to do a follow up visit to CADS Enhancement Centre on Friday, 23th July to see the end result of the ICI Dulux make-over. We also wanted to spend some time with the children as we did not get the chance to do so during our last visit. So on this visit, we did painting activities, played games and just talked to the children.

After both visits, we sat down together and did reflections about the campaign and the impact it made on society. We as a group felt that this campaign made an impact on us and made us want to participate more in environmental friendly awareness campaign as we had learnt about how dangerous VOCs can be and how it can affect our health as well.

We also applied and made full use of the skills and values we learnt in our Study Skills and Employability class. Skills such as interpersonal, people and communication skills came in handy while time management, jobs delegation and tolerance was a learning process.
