Damien Rice

News Article

Folk rock may not be a genre that will capture the world’s music scene, but Damien Rice would. An Irish rock singer, Damien Rice was initially in a rock band, Juniper, but left after a misunderstanding with their then label, Polygram in 1999. In 2002, Rice released his first album, O, thanks to the help of his second cousin, David Arnold. This album was dedicated to Irish musician, Mic Christopher and won the Shortlist Music Prize.

Damien Rice Six songs were released from his debut album, O, with Lonely Soldier ft Christy Moorty making it big in Ireland, reaching the 4th spot in the charts. Other songs in this album are Cannonball and The Blower’s Daughter, which was featured in the film Closer.

Following the year in 2006, Rice releases his second studio album, 9. His second studio album features three singles: Rootless Tree, Dogs and 9 Crimes, which was previously heard television drama series; Grey’s Anatomy, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Standoff. What makes Damien Rice’s album uniquely different from other music albums are the choice of words in the lyrics to his songs that are deep, filled with connotations and relatable meanings. Limited usage of instruments in his songs gives it a raw basic feel.

Some songs sound like poetry reading at its best. Although he may not be entirely famous in Malaysia, many still know who he is and what he is about. His albums are anticipated mostly in the UK and Ireland.

At only 35 years of age, Rice has recorded almost 30 soundtracks for various movies and TV shows, almost 20 appearances in movies and talk shows and gotten involved in various non-governmental charity organizations. Even though there are only two albums under his belt, Rice is collaborating and participating in other music albums till this day.
