Freshman Camp 2011: Refresh, Renew, Re-Bond

News Article

By Balamurugan Radakrishnan

“Wow”, “Amazing” & “Awesome” were the three words cheered by the campers as they were asked to describe their experience during the two day Freshman Camp 2011. This was entirely motivated by the activities and hardship they went through as a group.  The freshman camp was organized by UCSI University’s Student Council with the objective to create a healthy relationship between the juniors and seniors also among the local and international students.

Freshman Camp 2011

On 14th January 2011, around 120 students plus another 30 student council cabinet members and student affairs staff of UCSI University consisting of both junior and senior students gathered at the student centre for the departure briefing and to check in for an unforgettable adventure at Dusun Eco Resort Bentong, Pahang.

The journey by bus to the resort was rather quiet as the campers decided to conserve their energy by sleeping. As they reach the campsite after the two hour journey, they were introduced to their group facilitators, sorted into teams and transported to the camp via truck (literally on the back of the truck, standing).

As campers reach the main hall, they were given the house rules. They were to work on their team identities, appoint a leader, group name, a cheer and a flag which portrayed the group’s individuality and identity. It was an attribute they carried with them till the end. It also served as a motivation and encouragement in breakthrough challenges and obstacles prepared the organizers.

The activities included a night walk (after-rain-night- jungle tracking), a two part amazing race series where the first part is an obstacles course,

building and rowing a self assembled raft plus walking on a hanging bridge. The second part of the race consists of station games which tested the team’s thinking ability, mobility and teamwork. They also participated in a talent time where they were given a general theme which was change and the category of performance. The categories were a sketch, a mime show, singing and dancing.

We can do this

Apart from the fun factors, the campers were also exposed to a couple of workshops and talks from the Student Development and Counselling Unit from Student Affairs. Their workshops were about making new friends and adapting to changes in a new environment. They had fun while getting to know each other as they worked towards the completion of the games, learning new culture and languages, even attempting to understand thinking styles of different people from different backgrounds.

It is hoped that in a nutshell, the Freshman Camp 2011 reached its objectives in uniting the campers and instilling teamwork while welcoming the new students to UCSI University. Maybe we might just  have a better breed of students in the semesters to come.
