By Conrad Edmund Bateman Mitch Albom once said that, “The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.” In conjunction with a yearlong celebration of UCSI University’s Silver Jubilee, the
"Light UP Lives Charity"
Tired of pop songs, synthesised disco tunes and rap medleys that you can’t quite make out? Well, the other alternative is country music for those of you who are looking for something more soothing to the mind, to the ears and to add a touch of inspiration to your lives.
While some may be familiar with country artistes such as Taylor Swift, Keith Urban and Shania Twain, the name Lady Antebellum might not strike any recognition because their music does not receive rotation on Malaysian radio airwaves as there are no radio stations in Malaysia dedicated to playing country music only.

Lady Antebellum's discography
Formed in Nashville, Tennessee, Lady Antebellum is an American country group which comprises of Charles Kelley, Dave Haywood and Hillary Scott. According to the trio, the name ‘Lady Antebellum’ represents a sense of nostalgia found in the songs they sing. Since their name tends to be a mouthful, fans refer to them affectionately as ‘Lady A‘.
Although their music blends in some traditional country elements, they have managed to maintain a contemporary sound with a rocking energy from start to finish.
The group first made its debut in 2007 as guest vocalists on Jim Brickman’s single Never Alone. Shortly after that, they released the single Love Don’t Live Here in May 2008, which also served as the first single to the group’s self-titled debut album.
The fresh and unique single I Run To You was the group’s first Number One on the charts in July 2009, which lead to their debut album being certified platinum in the United States.
Ever since the distinctive sound of the harmonic trio took over America, there was no looking back. Numerous accolades poured in for the group, such as Top New Duo or Group in 2009 by the Academy of Country Music and New Artist of the Year in 2008 by the Country Music Association. At the 52nd Grammy Awards this year, they took home the award for Best Country Performance by Duo or Group with Vocals for I Run to You.
Need You Now was the first single off the group’s second album of the same name which was released in January 2010. The song was an instant hit and it proved Lady Antebellum’s success when it became the group’s second Number One on the Hot Country Songs chart.

Newcomer to the country music scene
Lady Antebellum’s music has certainly brought meaning to the younger generation who might not take lyrics to heart. With lines such as picture perfect memories scattered all around the floor and reachin’ for the phone cause I can’t fight it anymore, the group connects to their audience by singing about challenges that we face in our daily lives.
The trio also performed well onstage, unlike some artistes that lip-sync. After their first live performance, this is what Scott had to say, “It felt like magic, we all felt more comfortable onstage together than we ever had alone.” So let’s hope Lady Antebellum stays around for a long time to influence new country acts and bring country music to greater heights.
