By Conrad Edmund Bateman Mitch Albom once said that, “The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.” In conjunction with a yearlong celebration of UCSI University’s Silver Jubilee, the

15Malaysia is a short film project consisting of 15 short films made by 15 Malaysian filmmakers. These films not only deal with socio-political issues in Malaysia, they also feature some of the best-known faces in the country, including actors, musicians and top political leaders. You may think of them as funky little films made by 15 Malaysian voices for the people of Malaysia.

Joshua and 'Mama Leong'
The 2009 winner of the competition was UCSI University’s Joshua Chay from the B.A. in Mass Communications.
The short film that brought him to fame was entitled ‘Mama Leong’ which he said was a school project. He simply described the story of a 75 year old woman who reminisces on her life of living in Malaysia.
“I felt surprised and humbled by Mama Leong’s win. I never imagined that it could win the competition,” He said.
Joshua started his career and love for film making in high school.
Joshua also spoke on why he chose to study at UCSI University and how his passion for film making has led him to learn more about film and television outside the class.
“I chose to study at UCSI University because of the FTV course,” said Joshua. “It has helped me to a certain degree but everything I know so far is self-taught.”
He believes that the main reason why his video won was because it told a Malaysian story which he said was based on the judge’s comment.
Joshua has plans to take the film industry by storm but hopes to make his films unique and not so common from what other directors are doing in Malaysia.

Joshua on location
“I am hoping to do my bit for the film industry here. Maybe make some films that are not the usual run of the mill Malaysian stuff that’s been out there.”
He also feels that success in the film industry comes through dedication, passion and love for the job.
His advice to upcoming, young and inspiring film makers is simple, “always keep an eye out for competitions like these but most importantly, keep working on your passion and not just for competitions or school work”.
Hopefully, Joshua’s love for film making will take him to higher places, better projects and bigger wins in the near future. http://joshuachay.com
