Minda Big Walk 2010

What comes to mind when we hear the words mental health? Is it a feeling of well-being? Happiness? The ability to cope with life’s challenges? To accept others or is it to have a positive attitude towards oneself? If this was an exam question, the answer would be probably be ‘all of the above’.

The Minda Big Walk 2010 organized by the Malaysian Mental Health Association (MMHA) and Minda Malaysia was planned to amplify this. The event designed in conjunction with World Mental Day was held on 10th October, 2010 at Dataran Petaling Jaya. The event saw participation from a few universities, namely UCSI University, HELP University College, Sunway University College and University of Malaya.

The event kicked off at 7am with aerobic exercises and then participants were flagged off by Deputy Minister of Health Malaysia Datuk Rosnah Abd. Rashid Shirlin.

The programme’s main aim is to create better public awareness on mental health and disorders. It was also in tandem to encourage participants to be aware in the prevention treatment for mental disorders. MMHA and Minda Malaysia efforts to co-operate with the government and other agencies e.g. National Council for Welfare and Social Department Malaysia  on advocacy and other activities relating to mental health should also be applauded as it also provides rehabilitation services for the mentally ill.

Other events included overcoming individual stress, measures for stress management, cancer prevention and maintaining a healthy diet with low fat food and more fruits and vegetables. Entertainment performances were also part of the activities with Line dancing, singing and a dance, Aikido Shudokan Malaysia performed by the Aikido groups.

Participants also took a tour to the exhibition site where many pictures and posters of mental illness and diseases were displayed. Psychology students from different institutions of higher learning also came together to help people who were interested in the mental health screening.

Donations and lucky draws saw the closing of the event that was supported by Giant, the Ministry of Health Malaysia, Lembaga Promosi Kesihatan Malaysia to raise funds for MMHA activities.
