By Conrad Edmund Bateman Mitch Albom once said that, “The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.” In conjunction with a yearlong celebration of UCSI University’s Silver Jubilee, the
"Light UP Lives Charity"
Do you know that by organizing a blood donation drive with just 10 people, we have the power to save 30 precious lives? Regrettably, more often than not people tend to take things for granted. That is, until a loved one is sick or ones own demise approaches.
Realizing this undervalued priceless deed, UCSI University School of Nursing made their move by organizing a blood donation drive in conjunction with Pink October on 1st and 2nd October 2009. A large number of student donors in UCSI University stepped forward to make a difference during the campaign.
Another noteworthy highlight of the Pink October event was perhaps the edifying exhibition. Pink October is a worldwide campaign first initiated in August 2006 by Mr. Mathew Oliphant to fight against breast cancer. In supporting this meaningful program, students from the Nursing School aimed to raise awareness among the university community on how deadly breast cancer is to women. There was educational information about breast cancer on how to detect abnormal lumps and early detections.
To make Pink October even more meaningful, a fund-raising charity bazaar was also set up. Students were captivated by the flea market and fun activities. There were nail polishing services, food and handicrafts fair as well.
The event that lasted for two days ended with a big success. Not only did the event educate the students on protection against breast cancer but also helped the poor with the money collected from the fund raising activities.
