Students of SM112 (Introduction to Public Speaking) gave out their final speeches on 30th July 2009, from 2pm till 5 pm in the A block (lobby) of UCSI University. This final event tested students’ overall performance and presenting skills adopted by them in delivering their speech.
Students were evaluated according to an evaluation form by the lecturer Mr.Mohd Hellis Mohd Som, on their performance of speaking openly and confidently in public, and how well they used their visual aids. In addition, students were assessed on the way they organized their speeches according to the text template that was taught in class, which would help to become an effective public speaker.
All 30 students were free to choose their own topics of interest, and were asked to use at least one visual aid to enhance their speech. Two M.C Sarah and Carmen chose the students’ turns for their speeches randomly. The A block lobby was selected for this event in order to provide an appropriate audience for the students. As the time of the event was the lunch hour, it opened the door for many students and lecturers to listen to these speeches. Furthermore, as there is no written exam for this subject, this project acted as the final exam for the students, to bring out what they’ve learnt in the class and apply it in front of the audience.
Overall, the event was a learning experience for all the students as it gave a chance for all to organize their speeches, show their strengths and capabilities, and come up with creative ideas to make the speech as interesting as possible. Moreover, it enabled them to address a public audience and interact with them during their speeches. Therefore, this project aided to enhance and improve public speaking skills in students, which can be a very vital tool for future use.
