"Light UP Lives Charity"
By Jaqueline Agutu Andago
Based on a series of various cults and Christian beliefs, the story sets off with an emotional scene that is clearly a fight of good versus evil.
Nicolas Cage plays Behmen, a knight who realizes that the church is killing innocent women and children in the name of war for the church. Behmen and his best friend Felson (Ron Pearlman) decide to stop serving the church and head back to their home.
As they travel, they find cities where people are dying from the Black Plague which is believed to be a curse. They find themselves in a situation where they must transport a young girl, Anna suspected of being a witch to a monastery where the monks can decide her fate.
As they set off on their long journey, they are accompanied by Eckhardt (Ulrich Thomsen), Debelzaq (Stephen Campbell Moore), Kay (Robert Sheehan) and Hagamar (Stephen Graham) who show them the way to the monastery.
The movie keeps us guessing if the girl really is a witch until the very last scene. The curiosity keeps growing as various scenes pass and you keep asking “Is she really the witch?” She kills a man in a mysterious way while still locked in a cage and then she saves Kay who is about to fall to his death.
Although the film creates interest, it is not for the faint hearted as there are many scenes of abnormal deaths due to the Black Plague. We see things such as burned and swollen bodies, mass graves and endless blood.
Tragedy befalls Behmen and Felson while trying to save the Book of Solomon which is believed to have the power to get rid of the Black Plague and other evils. Behmen gives the book to Kay and makes him promise to look after Anna. Unfortunately we do not know what becomes of Kay and Anna when they go back to their town.
