By Conrad Edmund Bateman Mitch Albom once said that, “The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.” In conjunction with a yearlong celebration of UCSI University’s Silver Jubilee, the
"Light UP Lives Charity"
Never having a penchant for religious songs except for a few well known ones during the special occasions of Ramadan and Syawal, I wondered what the fuss was about this album simply called – Thank you Allah.
I’m not sure what it was that attracted me to have a listen – maybe because the religious songs are sang in English and that I could relate better, maybe it was the mixture of Arab and Urdu that made it have a hint of Hindustani or maybe just the simple lyrics that gives praise to Allah for everything He has blessed the singer with, that touched me the most.
Maher Zain popped out of nowhere (well at least for me) and suddenly became a household name here in Malaysia. The singer’s main reason for making this album was to share his thoughts and feelings with everyone. He wanted them to be touched by what touched him, to share the answers he found to many questions he had.
This 29 year old singer and songwriter, has a BA in Aeronautical Engineering and hails from Stockholm, Sweden. His previous job was a Music Producer and has worked with RedOne, the producer behind Lady Gaga and Akon. So this is a big leap of faith from that genre to Islamic Music.
There are a few interesting tunes in this album. For instance, Always be there, Insya Allah, For the rest of my life, Allah Allah Kiya Karo (that sounds very Hindustani), Baraka Allahu Lakuma (a mix of Arab) and of course the title song Thank You Allah. This album from Awakening Records houses 14 songs with one being acoustic (Thank You Allah).
Maher hopes that his meaningful songs will inspire and entertain people and send a message of peace and hope to the world. He ends his album with this du’a: May Allah always bless and guide us to the right way.
So if you are on a journey searching for the right way, I can’t promise you that this album would do the trick. But then no matter what our religions are, I pray that our respective God’s will open every door for us and makes it easy to find and remember as He promised He is always near and waiting for us to take that first step. Insya Allah.
