UCSI University’s Clubs Week, organized by the student council, and was held at the multipurpose hall to allow student oriented clubs operating in the university to create awareness on their existence and to brief those who attended on their aims and objectives.

The event which had representatives of the various clubs set up booths meant to attract new students into their fold as well as afford existing members an opportunity to interact with the new members.

However, various clubs had different reasons for setting up booths at the event.

“Basically we organized this event so students are aware of the clubs and student associations in the university. In total we have more than 45 registered clubs which includes sports and performing arts, but today only 22 clubs have set up booth here for the event,” said Kendrick Ng, director of publicity and multimedia of student’s council.

“The event is for everyone to interact with students and not only for academic purposes.” said Simon Goh, President of the Management Student Association (MSA). “The objective is to unite all the management students to work as a team, it’s not easy but it’s workable. The Management Students Association was recently launched on May 13 2009 and we have so far attracted 120 members. I believe we are gaining ground.”

Cherish Leow, Vice President of the English Language Society (ELS) said she was part of a similar club in her former school before she transferred to UCSI University.

“The reason why I joined this society is because the club is dying and I feel it is my obligation to join hands with the active members of the club to revive it and take it to greater heights,” she said, adding, “Another good reason is because of my love for English, I read English books, watch English movies and basically because I have passion for English language. So far, there are 25 members and we hope to see the membership grow after this event”.

“Before we formed this club there was a drama club in UCSI University but it was not successful because there was lack of interest in drama so we came up with this club to include other performances as well,” said Advent Tan, Vice President Performance Arts Guild (PAG). He thinks that members can now include other performances such as singing, playing musical instruments or they can simply have a mini play. “This guild’s objective is to promote performing arts among UCSI University students. So far, we have 10 registered members and we are positive the membership will grow.”

Clubs that were featured at the event include: Indian Cultural Society (ICS), Information Technology Students Association (ITSA), Pet Lovers Club (PLC), Dance Club (DC), Management Students Association (MSA), English Language Society (ELS), Performing Arts Guild (PAG), Table Tennis Club (TTC), Volley Ball Club (VBC), Badminton Club (BC), Dodge Ball Club (DBC), and Junior Chambers International (JCI). All the clubs represent certain interests aimed at developing students in different aspects of life.
