Of kuih raya, buffets and everything in between

Yes, Hari Raya is just round the corner and this is when the frenzy of doing Raya shopping overtakes Raya itself. I was in the heart of K.L. just to catch a glimpse of all the craziness that was a ritual with every major celebration in this country. The roads leading to K.L. were crammed because

The Last Airbender - Visual Treat!

If I mention the word ‘Avatar’ in passing, I am sure you would imagine blue creatures jumping from one tree branch to another. I love THAT Avatar, but I’m not here to talk about the inhabitants of Planet Pandora. It is sad that not many people recognise that Avatar was originally the name used for a cartoon

UCSI University pledges solidarity with Earth Hour

News Article

Global warming is now the greatest threat we have ever faced.  But we can make a difference if we act together. Switch off your light for 60 minutes and stop the global warming before it is too late!

More than one billion people around the world took part in Earth Hour. UCSI University joined in the celebration by holding a concert at the hilltop on 27th March 2010 to show solidarity towards stopping global warming.

Banners and posters were posted weeks in advance to urge everyone to switch of their lights and support Earth Hour and also to educate the students about energy conservation. This year, UCSI University rocked very well in the dark with rides on a hot-air balloon, releasing helium balloons and band performances 370 feet above sea level!

By 6.30 pm, about 300 students including residents nearby came to show support and gathered around to have a feel of getting into the hot air balloon. Sky Events, the hot air balloon team, tried their very best to battle with strong winds to raise their balloon. The queue started to become longer although the weather was hot. There was a mad rush for tickets which was priced at RM10 per person.

The bands took over the stage from Benji, the host of the event at 7.30 pm. It kicked off with An Honest Mistake rocking their way with their first song as the crowd was still waiting to get on the hot-air balloon. The blend of their drum, violin and electric guitar managed to pull the crowd. Their grand entrance with the non-stop performance was a good start of the concert.

Up next was the Halfway Kings, whose acoustic sound gave a different variety of music. Although they were lacking a drummer, their performance was nevertheless rocking and refreshing. The crowd waved their hands in the air and made the performance lively and exciting.

Benji did the countdown to celebrate Earth Hour with everyone and at 8.30pm. As Earth Hour commenced, the lights were turned off and everyone let go of their helium balloons with messages to save the Earth. Although it was dark, Disagree, an Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM) winner, simply amazed everyone with their performance.

While listening to the performers, people were still waiting and cheering for the hot-air balloon ride. By 8.45pm, after many attempts, the first ride took off, and the crowd was enthusiastic. The UCSI University’s Student Council also set up a booth for those who wanted food and drink while enjoying the concert.

Eve continued the performance with students dancing and singing along with them. After one hour celebrating Earth Hour, the lights came on and bands continued to entertain the crowd.  Last on the entertainment bandwagon was, 3 Points to 8, UCSI University School of Music band took over the stage for a few songs.

The crowd was immersed and sang along with them. Since they were the last performers, they ended the night with Michael Jackson’s song ‘Earth’ which was an absolutely wonderful tribute to MJ and to the Earth itself. Kudos to UCSI University for a spectacular event and hopefully there will be a bigger crowd joining to save and love the Earth next time.
